YouCam and easily be the main photo and video application for your Windows 8 tablet. It launches quickly and has a ton of effects to mess around with. You can choose frames, video effects, photo effects, and distortion filters.

You can easily switch between taking photos and videos with the slider on the top right. Taking pictures is snappy and they show up immediately in the camera roll. YouCam allows you to add effects to photos and videos after they have been taken.

Other than all the silly photo and video effects, YouCam is pretty basic. There's an eye icon on the top left that allows you to "enhance" your image or video. I found that it just boosts the exposure.

Overall, YouCam is a simple, easy to use photo and video application that you can comfortably use as your default photo and video application on Windows 8. Its not as much of a copy of Apple's Photo booth as Photo Booth for Windows 7 and we appreciate YouCam trying to differentiate itself.

Although its effects are a bit gimmicky, its ease of use and snappy interface makes it a recommended program.

Once installed, launch the program and you'll immediately see the image taken by your webcam. Snap automatically detects your webcam and offers you all its tools to begin playing around. We say "play" because this is what you're going to do with Snap - don't expect to create serious, professional photo collages like you would do with other graphic editors.

Snap is a fun tool, so it's intended to obtain funny photos that you can use to play a joke on a friend, create an original avatar for your favourite IM client or design a custom greeting card. The app includes a variety of filters and effects to apply to your photos, such as night vision, mirror effect, do I look fat?, clipart and animations. Using them is a cinch: just select a given filter, see what it looks like in the preview window and click on the snap button to capture the image if you like the result. Snapshots are automatically saved in a specified folder, but unfortunately you can't select their size or format.

Once you've taken your fun images, you can open them in whatever app you liike, and make further edits or simply email or print them. Bear in mind that you can't do this within the app - it only lets you share on Facebook.

All in all, Snap is an easy-to-use application that can provide hours of fun. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Like the original app, Photo Booth for Windows 7 includes a selection of special effects you can apply to the image on your webcam in real time, and then take a picture of it. Once the picture appears in the camera roll at the bottom of the window, you can save it to the hard drive or share it on Facebook and Twitter straight away.

The good thing about Photo Booth for Windows 7 is that it doesn’t require installation and is very easy to set up. All you need is Adobe Flash Player and a webcam. Then you can start applying effects and taking snapshots of yourself and your friends posing for the webcam.

Though Photo Booth for Windows 7 lacks some features found in the original program – such as background effects, or being able to record video – it’s still one of the best Photo Booth clones for Windows you can find these days.

This application is super-easy to work with. In fact, using it feels more like playing around - you can drag and drop your images onto the interface, arrange them onto a page, drag over speech bubbles and enter your text.

Comic Life offers bunches of shapes, forms and lettering with styles reminiscent of the best cartoons and comics. All can be customized from the style attributes tab on the right. We also liked the filters, which lets you give a real atmosphere to your photos, like turning them into a scene from Sin City. Comic Life also features loads of templates and themes that you can start off with.

Importing pictures into Comic Life is easy, as you'll only need to drag and drop them from your desktop or pick straight from the preview pane in the application. Even more, you can use your webcam or DV camera to take snaps and post them immediately into your comic strip. This is a paid app, but you’ll be able to try Comic Life free for a while – and it’s well worth it!

Very intuitive and loaded with features, Comic Life is a great way to have fun with your pictures - highly recommended.

ArcSoft WebCam Companion is a multifunctional program for your webcam. It carries out various functions, some of them practical, such as photo editing, others fun, like funky frames and masques, and others serious, such as its monitoring mode.

The most basic feature of ArcSoft WebCam Companion is its capture mode, a function that allows you to take photo and video images with your webcam and save, email or print them. There is also an editing feature, but although it allows you to directly upload your videos to YouTube, its editing tools are nothing too amazing.

In terms of fun, ArcSoft WebCam Companion lets you morph yourself with a range of photos and apply fun frames to your image screen, although this feature was not working properly during our test. The masque function, as the morphing is called, is silly but entertaining, and if you get bored of the pre-selected images, you can always make your own template from any .JPEG image.

The monitoring function is one that sets ArcSoft WebCam Companion apart from it competitors. Setting up the feature is easy, and our tests in the Softonic office showed that it works. ArcSoft WebCam Companion keeps an extensive log of all activity detected and can chose notify you by email or FTP if it detects anything to be worried about. A single monitoring session can last for 18 hours, detecting motion, faces or both.

Although you can customize both individual modes and the program as a whole, I came away from ArcSoft WebCam Companion feeling that it didn't have quite as much flexibility and choice as that offered by its competitors. On the plus side, practical, fun and serious is a combination not offered by many and is something that has to stand in its favor.

ArcSoft WebCam Companion offers a good choice of functions, but still left me feeling flat.

The web interface is not always the best way to update your Twitter. You need to open a new browser tab, load up the Twitter website, log in with your credentials and then write your tweet. Way too many steps for such a short message.

With Twittastic you can avoid all these extra clicks and dramatically improve your Twitter experience. This Twitter client enables you to update your personal profile – and also follow what you're friends are up to – all from the comfort of your desktop.

Twittastic features a clear, minimalist design and includes a few extra tools I found particularly interesting. You can, for example, take a screenshot and share it on Twitter straight away – the program takes care of uploading the file to Twitpic and pasting the correspondent link on the text field. The same process can be applied to photos, webcam snapshots and any other file on your computer.

Another fun feature is the ability to flip your text so that it's totally upside down. Not very useful, I know, but totally confusing for your followers. Twittastic also includes a special menu to insert small graphics in your tweets, though unfortunately it doesn't seem to work properly. Another drawback to Twittastic is that it only supports one account.

Twittastic is a comfortable desktop Twitter client that enables you to send tweets and follow your friends' updates, and also features other interesting extra tools.

Imagine yourself with long hair or short hair. Imagine yourself as a brunette or blond. Hair Pro lets you visualize any appearance before taking the big leap. If you have a digital camera, webcam or scanner, you'll be able to import a picture of yourself (or any one else) directly into the program.

Then, you can choose from a collection of lengths, styles and colors. You can make some adjustments to these full color photos, and produce a multi-page photo album of all the various looks. You can view these images from your PC, or print out a copy to share with others. Whether the program is used at home or in the salon, Hair Pro should prove to be a hit.
