Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin (for RocketDock)

Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin is a simple program that can give your RocketDock interface the appearance of the charms bar in the Windows 8 Modern UI.

Compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and 7, Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin offers two separate skin options for your RocketDock. One is transparent and the other is black, giving you the option to switch easily and to whatever suits your current aesthetic.

To make use of Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin, you'll need to first download and install Rocketdock, a nifty little app that gives you a Mac-style navigation bar for your PC's desktop. Then unzip Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin and move the "Transparent charmbar" folder into the RocketDock program's skins folder. Strangely enough, the black bar option is named "settings," which could get confusing. You'll also need to move that in the same manner though.

Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin's Startmenu.exe file also needs to be moved into the RocketDock folder. Once done, Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin should work and appear once you launch RocketDock though.

Setup for Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin can be a bit of a pain, but once done you'll have two great new skin options for your RocketDock navigation bar.

Download Windows 8 Charms Bar Skin (for RocketDock) in Softonic

Winstep Nexus Dock is a fully-customizable dock designed to give you some of the aesthetics and functions of the <a href="http://en.softonic.com/mac"target="_blank">Mac OS X dock.

If you are sick of the Window's task bar and want to modify your computer's interface a bit, the Winstep Nexus Dock is a great, free way to try out a dock. The Winstep Nexus Dock is feature-packed with tons of themes, <a href="http://en.softonic.com/s/widgets"target="_blank">widgets, and options to configure behavior and looks. It can even serve as a fully-functional replacement for your task bar if you wish.

The Winstep Nexus Dock is familiar because it shares so many features and looks of <a href="http://objectdock.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">ObjectDock, one of our favorite taskbar replacements. While they look similar, we found that ObjectDock is actually more intuitive to use and customize. There's no doubt that the Winstep Nexus Dock is feature-packed but the menus and options are spread all over the place and you really have to learn to use the program.

There is a pro version of the Winstep Nexus Dock available which allows you to create multiple docks, nest docks, create shelves, and much more. We think that the free version will be enough for casual users, though.

Overall, the Winstep Nexus Dock is a great, free dock app that can be as simple as an app launcher or as functional as a Windows taskbar replacement. Check out <a href="http://objectdock.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">ObjectDock if you want something with a more intuitive interface.

Download Nexus 12.2 in Softonic

iPadian is a nifty tool that simulates the interface of an iPad on your Windows desktop.

If you're a serious iPad fanatic, here's your opportunity to make your Windows PC take on the appearance of the iPad's graphically impressive interface.

iPadian consists of a Dashboard which displays several features: two widgets for Facebook, a search bar, a dock with common applications and a collection of icons for other programs. Included are popular apps like YouTube and Instagram, as well as games like Angry Birds.

Every time you open a program in iPadian, a browser window will open to show it. On the right side you'll find another list of applications you can click on as shortcuts. While you browse, you will see your Facebook wall or Wikipedia search, for example. This means that the apps aren't native to your computer though, as all of them open in web pages after being clicked. To some users, this might cheapen the iPadian experience. To others, iPadian may be viewed as a unique way to visit certain web app sites.

iPad enthusiasts now have a way to transform their Windows interface to something more OS X-based with iPadian.

Download iPadian 1.0 in Softonic

Snow Transformation Pack is the perfect visual theme for those who love Macs but for some reason are stuck with Windows computers.

This is, in fact, more than just a visual theme. Not only does Snow Transformation Pack change graphic details in your system – such as the background wallpaper, logon screen, system icons and cursors – but it also adds extra apps to resemble the Mac OS even more faithfully – like the popular Dock or the Spaces functionality.

The results achieved with Snow Transformation Pack are thus quite impressive – at least for a visual theme. The Windows toolbar moves to the top of the screen to emulate Mac’s menu bar, and replaced with a fully functional dock. All Windows system icons are Mac style, and Snow Transformation Pack also allows you to skin all the apps you use with a Mac look as well.

Having a Windows computer with Snow Transformation Pack is obviously not the same as having a real Mac, but at least it looks more or less like the real deal. The only thing you’ll have to put up with is a painful installation that requires at least three system restarts.

If you’d like to use a Mac but for some reason you’re stuck with Windows, Snow Transformation Pack can make things a bit easier for you.

Download Snow Transformation Pack 1.0 in Softonic

Circle Dock is a circle-shaped menu that can be easily customized with direct shortcuts to your most frequently used programs and folders. Once installed on your system, you can quickly start adding new shortcuts by dragging and dropping them on the circle – though you'll need to confirm a dialog window for each one.

The settings menu in Circle Dock includes a handful of options with which you can configure both the program's appearance and behavior. That said, changing Circle Dock's interface is a lengthy process; instead of changing every single element one by one, it would be easier to pick a skin that would change everything in one click.

Circle Dock can be easily displayed and hidden with customizable keyboard combinations, so that it stays out of the way when you don't need it.

If you’re looking for a little Mac-like functionality on your Windows PC, give XWindows Dock a try.
XWindows Dock is an easy to use, minimal dock bar that will give you instant access to your most frequently-used apps. The basic app contains icons for My Computer and the Recycle Bin, but you’ll be able to simply drag and drop anything else you want.
For certain features, however, such as the Gmail checker, you’ll need to download the separate XWindows Dock plug-in manager.
This dock app isn’t the most visually attractive around.
Beyond size and location on your screen, it can’t really be modified without downloading extra modules. One nice feature, however, is Container, which allows you to place any folder on the dock.
When you click, you’ll get an easy-to-view fan of the items that folder contains.
There’s nothing really wrong with XWindows Dock, and some of you might even appreciate the minimalism of the application.
During testing, however, it seemed a little too basic and inflexible, especially when compared to other, fancier docks like Nexus. XWindows Dock does exactly what it says it will though, so if you like its style, go right ahead.
As docks go, XWindows Dock is fairly basic, but entirely functional.

Download XWindows Dock 2.0.3 in Softonic

Advanced Launcher is a simple toolbar that you can put anywhere on your screen – or even hide as a small icon in the System Tray – and use it to open your most frequently-used folders, system tools and software applications. The toolbar is fully customizable, meaning you can add and remove icons at your leisure, create submenus and change its appearance.

But Advanced Launcher is more than just a simple launcher. You can create several different toolbars with apps grouped according to their topic: image, audio, video, tools, etc. Adding icons to them is as easy as dragging and dropping a selected folder or application onto the toolbar.

The toolbars in Advanced Launcher can be set to dock to screen borders and hide when not in use, so that they don't take up any space. On the downside, I missed some extra features such as being able to create vertical toolbars or use keyboard hotkeys to open and close them.

Advanced Launcher is a handy, fully customizable alternative to Windows default Start menu from which you can easily access your favorite apps and folders.

Download Advanced Launcher 1.41 in Softonic

Even if you don't have Vista, the Universal Vista Inspirat Bricopack will make your PC look like it’s been fitted with Microsoft’s latest operating system. Not limiting itself to one visual style, Universal Vista Inspirat is a bulky (483 MB) yet complete theme pack made up of wallpapers, icons and appearances that will give your PC a complete makeover.

We were impressed by this Vista theme pack. Not only do you get the sleek menu bar characteristic of Vista, but the theme also sets up a Mac-like dock where you can nest icons from your favorite applications. They even magnify when you roll over them!

With Universal Vista Inspirat's Ubericon feature you can get that magnifying touch for every item you double click. Another feature that separates Universal Vista Inspirat from other simple Vista Themes is Y’s Shadow. This feature gives a cool drop shadow to your windows, which you can easily increase or decrease and even apply to your taskbar.

Universal Vista Inspirat ingeniously improves the feel of your XP menu, but we felt a little more skeptical about the cosmetic changes it applies to other Microsoft applications. Word and Outlook are given a fresher, whiter look, but we were unimpressed by how Windows Media Player appeared, with a strange purple color replacing the default sleek dark feel.

Universal Vista Inspirat is an impressive theme pack filled with original features that definitely separates it from typical Vista themes.

Download Universal Vista Inspirat BricoPack 2.1 in Softonic

If you'd like to switch to Mac but haven't made up your mind yet, you can have a sneak peek at the operating system with the LeopardXP BricoPack.

LeopardXP BricoPack is a visual theme for Windows XP that completely transforms your old Microsoft OS into the brand new Apple system in just a couple of clicks. Unlike other visual themes that need certain libraries and drivers, or require you to install third-party apps on your own, LeopardXP BricoPack includes everything you need and is incredibly easy to install: click on the Next button a few times, wait for a while, restart and that's it.

LeopardXP BricoPack is obviously not like the real thing but it does quite a good job in trying to make Windows XP look like the Leopard OS. Not only does it install new skins, wallpapers and icons, but it also adds new functionalities such as a Mac OS style dock bar, a Spotlight clone (which by the way doesn't seem to work properly), a top toolbar and a similar file explorer. All of these are included in LeopardXP BricoPack as extra tools and you can choose not to install them. Also, LeopardXP works fine even in systems with low resources.

On the downside, there are still a few areas in which LeopardXP BricoPack could be improved: for example, there are some Windows icons that the theme doesn't replace and don't really fit in, like the Windows logon and switch off screens.

LeopardXP BricoPack is an attractive visual theme that completely transforms Windows XP into Mac OS Leopard.
Mac OS X Theme 1.3

Mac OS X Theme is a Mac-style visual theme that can make your Windows look like an Apple computer. It’s a WindowBlinds theme, which means you need that application to apply it to your system.

Once you have WindowBlinds installed, simply open the Mac OS X Theme file and you’ll be able to customize it to your liking. Mac OS X Theme features more than 20 styles to choose from, including the Aqua, Graphite and Platinum designs, with both left and right-handed button bars. You’ll be able to choose the desktop wallpaper and the system’s color scheme, as well as set the text font and transparency degree.

The Apple menu in Mac OS X Theme is unfortunately not an exact copy of the original but is pretty close. It's basically a stripped down Start Menu that has been made to look like the Apple menu in Mac OS X.

The look and feel in Mac OS X Theme is remarkably Apple, although Windows keeps creeping through, especially if we take into account two important flaws: the theme doesn’t include a dock-style taskbar, nor any Apple wallpaper.

Mac OS X Theme is a great visual theme for those who either can't afford a Mac or simply prefer the elegant Mac look and feel.

Download Mac OS X Theme 1.3 in Softonic

Vista Customization Pack 3.6

If you’ve had enough bad experiences upgrading your Microsoft products, you’re too poor to upgrade to Vista or you just refuse on principle, you can always customise Windows XP to make it look like Vista. The Windows Vista customisation pack gives you all the flashy features of Vista without having to shell-out a few hundred dollars for the original. It’s certainly proved a hit with Softonic users so far who have made this pack one of the site’s most popular downloads.

The pack includes a booty of Vista features including transparency of the windows, 3D Vista style icons, mouse cursors, boot screen, login screen, and a whole host of Vista themes to name a few. After installing the pack, you’ll be asked to restart, when you’ll find that your system has been through an impressive transformation although the fact that Windows Vista isn’t actually that radically different from XP, shouldn’t be held against this pack.

Amongst the major differences you will notice are some jazzy changes to your systems icons, skins and toolbars as well as new enhancements to your desktop such as a dock bar or if you prefer, a totally different system tray clock. Transfer file progress dialogs are transformed with swanky new 3D graphics and the sounds scheme has been beefed up to blow you out of your chair. Microsoft certainly spent lots of time designing these features. It was recently reported that they spent a year and a half just coming up with the start-up music alone.

Other changes include Windows Media Player which also receives a facelift although nothing worth getting excited about. The colours have been changed to a metallic-blue and the drop down menus have been replaced by an invisible menu which pops up when the mouse is waved over it. However, this feature actually becomes increasingly annoying with regular use and is best deactivated.

Whilst initially impressive, after a while these changes can cause problems. Users have reported that the new schemes not only slows down their PC’s but also cause it to crash randomly. It can also be a pain whenever there’s a problem with your PC. Since you are running a somewhat modified version of XP, normal troubleshooting guides may not work. You’ll subsequently have to uninstall the pack to make sure that it isn’t causing the problem. Fortunately however, the pack comes with an uninstaller that makes reverting back to XP simple although in time honoured Windows style, you’ll have to restart the computer.

For anyone who doesn’t add or remove programs regularly, we’d recommend this pack as it does an impressive job at emulating the $200+ Vista look. However, for those that make regular changes to their PC, the pack can end up being more hassle than its worth as the changes made can conflict with interfaces of other programs.

Download Vista Customization Pack 3.6 in Softonic

DeskTool is tightly integrated into the desktop shell of Windows 9x and Windows NT/2000/XP.

DeskTool has some nifty features that you might have come to expect from a modern Windows application. Drag and Drop is supported for adding, deleting and moving buttons around on the toolbar. You can "dock" DeskTool to any one of the 4 edges of your screen, much like the Windows 95 taskbar, or leave it free floating on the desktop. You can also make the toolbar "auto-hide" when docked to an edge, just as you can with the taskbar. DeskTool can be made to stay on top of other windows, making it readily accessible.

Download DeskTool 3.3.208 in Softonic
