iFlicks 1.1 build 538

If there's one major application missing on Leopard, it's one that allows you to manage your videos in an intelligent way.

That's exactly what the makers of iFlicks have tried to address by providing a simple but powerful tool to manage your videos. iFlicks features a simple drag and drop interface that allows you to categorize movies with a variety of information, such as title, episode, director, cast, genre, and more. It supports most video formats including QuickTime (.mov), Audio Video Interleave (.avi), MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and DV. You can add batches of clips for importing and the import process itself takes no longer than adding a song to your iTunes library.

When you want to access a clip, you can use the iFlicks movie player which open within a smaller Quicktime style window within the iFlicks interface. What the developers hope distinguishes iFlicks from other players are a few "smart" features that more intelligently organize your collection. Smart Collections allows you to organize your movies or clips by genre, director, actors etc. This is not much different to organizing your file folders by size, type etc but if you have a big collection, it could be useful.

The slickest feature however is the Gallery View which works similar to the album browser function in iTunes. Just press a button at the bottom of the iFlicks interface and suddenly your clips and movies are browsable as thumbnails or screenshots. There are also a few other notable features including the ability to search on Amazon and download film info so you don't have to enter it manually. There's also an automatic link to the Netflix database which is supposed to download the latest 100 releases to purchase, although the RSS feed was not working when I tried it.

iFlicks is a great little application for all those that have a huge movie collection and aren't sure how to manage it. It could well be on the way to being that truly essential elusive video app that Leopard is missing.

Download iFlicks 1.1 build 538 in Softonic

MacCaption 4.1.4

Subtitling your video or film can open it up to a much larger audience but most subtitling apps on the market are for those Mac users that just want to add subtitles to a DivX file they've downloaded or a funny YouTube video.

For serious professionals that need something more powerful, the options are far more limited but there are some out there, such as MacCaption. MacCaption is designed for those that need maximum control over how their subtitles are processed and displayed on screen. It allows for the importing and exporting of captions and automatic syncing with images. Not though that in this demo, a watermark is left on captions and imports/exports are limited in size.

It's pretty complex for beginners, although with a little time and effort, even non-professionals should be able to work it. To start with, create a text file of subtitles and import or drag into to the main window. Then select all of the captions and move them to the bottom of the screen where you'll see the first line suddenly displayed. Then you need to import a QuickTime or DV file. Once it's loaded, click on the Time Stamp button, listen to the dialog and press the 'I' key when you need to insert text. Type or drag the text and then click on Autosync and you're done. You need to keep repeating this until all of your subtitles are edited.

Once you're done, you can export the caption file to be edited or revised at a later date. For a professional application, MacCaption is surprisingly easy to use, although it is quite intimidating at first. For most people's needs, it will be way too much but for professionals, it's ideal.

MacCaption is a deceptively easy-to-use subtitling application for a professional tool although you'll only need it if you're a series movie maker.

Download MacCaption 4.1.4 in Softonic

Slideshow Magic 5.0.5

Slideshows are one of the best ways to add colour and life to a photo collection no matter what the subject matter.

Slideshow Magic is aimed at both home users and business professionals who want to impress friends or colleagues with their photo slideshow creations. Best of all, it doesn't require the viewer to have the program installed as all slideshows can be saved in any QuickTime compatible format.

The easy to use interface is somewhat like that of a video editor allowing you to add music or audio tracks either for the whole slideshow or just specific segments. You can add some impressive transitions and titles much in the same way as you do with Windows Movie Maker for example. The program also features a useful guide to help you get your photos online or burnt to DVD. However, unfortunately the program doesn't provide either it's own webspace or burner for uploading and saving photos. For uploading, you'll need an FTP client and web host and for burning, a third party burner such as Nero.

In addition, although it's a cross platform application, sharing with other platforms requires some form of network solution between clients (although this needn't be something complicated - a program like MSN Live Messenger is enough

Slideshow Magic is a relatively cheap but powerful way to get your photos either online or burnt to DVD.

Download Slideshow Magic 5.0.5 in Softonic
