Warner Bros has just released the exclusive new trailer for Barbie. The movie, starring Margot Robbie and directed by Greta Gerwig, will hit theaters worldwide on July 20, 2023, coinciding playfully with Oppenheimer. But even though we’ve seen some glimpses, we still didn’t know what the movie was about.
Now, finally, we are getting a clearer idea of what the Gerwig-directed film will be about. As many had predicted, the movie will depict the real-life adventures of Barbie and Ken, the dolls living in Barbyland, as they venture into the real world and face the challenges that await them there.
A barbie in the real world!
In the trailer, we get a closer look at the film. In addition to Robbie and Gosling as the leads, we also catch a glimpse of the formidable villain they will face: Will Ferrell. The actor will portray the CEO of the company managing the doll, and his ultimate goal is to have Barbie “locked back in a box” to prevent her from causing a catastrophe in the world… and in his company.
As the director has revealed, the movie will explore Barbie‘s loss of innocence and serve as a metaphor for all women who, upon reaching adolescence, experience the external pressures that dim their light. In fact, in the preview, we see how Barbie and Ken end up in jail after Barbie physically defends herself against a harasser who touches her inappropriately. Welcome to the real world.

Certainly, this trailer makes it much clearer what we can expect in theaters this summer. It’s a film that was eagerly anticipated even before its official announcement, so it’s evident that it has the potential to become one of the summer’s most highly anticipated releases… and of the year as well.
