A classic video game that until now you could only buy on DVD is coming to Steam in September

NITRO PLUS has confirmed that it’s going to re-release the classic visual novel on Steam Phantom: PHANTOM OF INFERNO NITRO ARCHIVE. It got an English edition in 2002, but since then it hadn’t been released outside Japan, making it totally inaccessible. This marks the first time it has been released outside Japan in more than twenty years with an official localization. It will also feature a new English translation and new content, based on the 2013 PC version.

The game, which focuses on its narrative, has a most unusual premise. A mysterious killer known as Phantom is taking out mafia leaders, shaking the foundations of the underworld. By chance, a teenage boy traveling in the US meets a girl his age and accidentally discovers that she is the mysterious Phantom, which draws him into grueling assassin training. He also uncovers a conspiracy that goes far beyond what he ever could have imagined.

The debut of one of the greats

The biggest selling point of Phantom: PHANTOM OF INFERNO NITRO ARCHIVE is that it was Gen Urobuchi’s debut game, a screenwriter best known for creating anime such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica or Psycho-Pass. That comes through in this game’s harshness, tone, and obsession with firearms. Despite being his debut, it’s a game that’s well worth it and it’s great to finally have a version of it available on Steam on September 4 in English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.
