A definitive version of a classic The Lord of the Rings game gets a surprise release

Aspyr has unexpectedly released a Legacy Edition of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North for modern platforms. Already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, users on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 will still have to wait for this new version of the game, which won’t be released until August 18.

A game brought up to date

Although Aspyr Media hasn’t specified what changes it has made to the game, it’s worth clarifying that, now that the game is out, we already know the details about it. This isn’t a remaster or a remake, but a rerelease of the original game with a patch that fixes some of the original’s bugs, in addition to adding upscaled textures up to 4K. In addition, the game now includes all the paid content that was previously available only as DLC.

Although The Lord of the Rings: War in the North was a sales flop at the time, with mixed reviews, over the years it has come to be seen as a minor but interesting entry in The Lord of the Rings lineup. Not a cult classic, but an interesting action RPG, even if it’s not on the level of the best games in its franchise, its generation, or its genre.
