Sam Altman‘s departure (and subsequent return) to OpenAI has made numerous headlines, and understandably so. The artificial intelligence revolution is led by this company, which ironically began as a non-profit organization. While things have settled down a bit, the issues surrounding OpenAI continue to raise unanswered questions: What caused Sam Altman‘s dismissal? A letter written by several researchers on staff seems to hold the answer.

According to Reuters, this letter warned about a significant AI discovery that could potentially threaten humanity. This finding, combined with the letter, were the two key events that led to Altman’s dismissal.

Another major concern of the OpenAI board was the commercialization of their advancements, with little time to ponder the consequences. Through internal messages, OpenAI confirmed the existence of a project called Q*, or Q Star. Company employees strongly believe that Q Star could represent a major breakthrough in the field of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Essentially, it’s a system that would surpass humans in a multitude of tasks.

Artificial intelligence is raising many moral dilemmas nowadays.

This new, much more advanced model uses significant computing resources to operate and is already capable of solving mathematical problems on its own. The truth is, at the moment, its level is comparable to that of an elementary school student. Still, at OpenAI, they have shown great optimism about its future potential.

For researchers, this fact is crucial because mathematics remains a limit to overcome for artificial intelligence. Developing an AI that can solve mathematical calculations would imply one thing: its reasoning capacity would closely resemble that of humans. While a calculator can solve certain operations up to a limit, an AGI could learn and understand what it’s doing.

ChatGPT is capable of generating coherent text based on statistics, as if it were a very powerful predictive keyboard. However, it doesn’t comprehend what it’s writing. With Q Star, the AI would move towards mimicking human reasoning. In the aforementioned letter, the researchers emphasize the potential danger that this technology could cause.
