A Game of Thrones now has a $2,200 30th Anniversary Edition

The Folio Society has a new official 30th-anniversary limited edition of George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones, and it’s aimed squarely at deep-pocketed collectors: 1,000 copies worldwide, at $2,200 apiece. Every copy is signed by George R.R. Martin, bound in what The Folio Society calls “dragon leather,” and filled out with new illustrations by Jonathan Burton. So this isn’t some ordinary reprint. It’s a full-on prestige collector’s piece.

The timing matters. Martin’s 1996 novel kicked off a series that has sold more than 90 million copies in 46 languages, helped push fantasy toward more realism, moral ambiguity, political calculation, and actual danger, and eventually gave rise to HBO’s Game of Thrones. Joe Abercrombie’s description still fits: “shocking, bold, transgressive, and transformative.”

Then there’s the other part of the story. The Winds of Winter still hasn’t arrived, after a wait that’s now longer than the time George R.R. Martin needed to publish the first five books. So fans are reacting in the usual split fashion: some are admiring the craftsmanship, some are recoiling at the price, and some are using the release to vent about an unfinished saga. All of that is happening while HBO’s House of the Dragon is in its third season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected in 2027.

If you collect Westeros material, this edition is worth picking up, assuming that $2,200 price tag doesn’t scare you off.
