The group of hackers known as ShinyHunters accessed internal data from Rockstar Games and, before their extortion deadline, made these details public. The leak shows information that is not particularly relevant to the development of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, despite the expectations it may have generated.
More than a million dollars a day
According to the revealed data, weekly earnings from GTA Online amount to $9.6 million between September 2025 and April 2026, while Red Dead Online generates only $500,000 weekly in the same period. This discrepancy in earnings highlights Rockstar’s preference for investing in its most lucrative franchise, leaving RDO in a state of neglect.
The popularity of GTA Online is reflected in its user base, with about 3.5 million monthly active players on PlayStation 5, compared to only 894,621 on PC. This notable difference could explain the lack of announcements about GTA VI for the latter platform. Additionally, it is revealed that 75% of GTA Online’s revenue comes from the sale of Shark Cards, virtual money packs, where only 4% of users generate the majority of the income, confirming the business model based on a few “whales” in free-to-play games.
Despite ShinyHunters’ effort to extort Rockstar Games for an amount of $200,000, the exposed information has been considered minimal and of low value by experts. This could lead to serious legal consequences for the group of hackers, who find themselves in a complicated situation after failing to obtain the expected profit and, instead, having revealed data that was already suspected in the digital entertainment field.
