Guerrilla Games has officially revealed its new title, Horizon Hunters Gathering, a tactical action game designed for up to three players. Unlike what many fans expected, this is not the conclusion of the Horizon trilogy, but a distinct experience that presents itself as a new attempt by the studio to explore different game formats. According to the studio director, Jan-Bart van Beek, the game “stands on its own” and does not aim to conclude Aloy’s story, who makes a brief appearance in the trailer.
An online game is not what you expected and the studio knows it
In Horizon Hunters Gathering, players will take on the role of hunters with unique skills, encompassing a variety of classes such as tank, sniper, and stealthy. This focus on character diversity promises to enrich gameplay, allowing for greater coordination among team members. Combat is described as “tactical, reactive, and skill-based,” which will require players to understand enemy movements and work together to overcome the powerful machines that threaten their world.
Despite the innovations, the response to the trailer has been mostly negative, with notable discontent among some fans, evidenced by the number of “dislikes” compared to “likes”.This suggests that traditional fans of the saga may be struggling to accept this new direction. For its part, Guerrilla Games has emphasized that it will continue to produce single-player titles, reaffirming its commitment to its identity as a studio.
Interested players will be able to participate in a small-scale closed test at the end of February, with access available on PlayStation 5 and PC. Users can add the game to their wishlist on Steam, where the title will also be available at launch. The blend of a new multiplayer approach with the tradition of Horizon’s narrative will sow expectations and debates in the gaming community in the coming months.
