That we will have a new model of PlayStation 5 at some point is a reality. With all the PlayStation consoles, we have had the usual revision to make it smaller or even more powerful models, so PS5 is not going to be an exception. The key here is when this is going to happen. According to the latest insiders, we could expect its announcement before the end of the summer.

This information comes from the podcaster Shpeshal_Nick, from the XboxEra podcast. As he posted in a tweet, this model would be announced at the upcoming PlayStation Showcase, although it would not be available for purchase until later.

This rumor is in line with another piece of information that we find more credible, provided by none other than Microsoft, their competition. During the FTC trial against Xbox for the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, one of the documents mentioned that Sony was preparing a new model of the PS5. This model would reportedly be priced at $399.99 and would be released by the end of 2023. Additionally, a “Pro” model with enhanced power is also said to be in the works for a later release.

The details about this new model were not clarified in the documents, but information from Tom Henderson, one of the most reputable insiders in the industry, suggests that it might ditch the BluRay drive in favor of an expansion bay. In simpler terms, you could purchase the console without a BluRay drive and then decide if you want to add one separately (at an extra cost). This would offer a way to have a digital console with the option to make it physical, rather than having two separate models as before.

As an interesting observation – or maybe not – PlayStation is currently offering a significant number of deals, including a model with a BluRay drive priced at 450 euros instead of the usual 550 euros. Many speculate that Sony is employing this strategy to clear stock in preparation for the launch of the new model. Is it true? Only time will tell.
