Anyone with a basic understanding of Magic, one of the most popular card games in history, will know the value of the Black Lotus. This card, released in 1993 as part of the Alpha set, has reached very high values in auctions due to its rarity and all the stories behind it. Thus, according to media such as The Gamer, only 1,000 units were printed, an aspect that added to its age (it is already 30 years old) makes this item the most valued of the license. And, after having exceeded half a million dollars at auction, it seems that it will soon break that record again.
In 2021, a Magic: The Gathering Black Lotus sold for more than $511,000. At the time, this piece achieved PSA’s Gem Mint 10 value, an aspect to which must be added that it had the signature of illustrator Christopher Rush, known for his contribution to the first Magic collection and sadly deceased in 2016. And, although they seemed like two unique conditions, history is repeating itself again and another card with similar characteristics has appeared for sale, a situation that may provoke another historic sale within Magic.
However, unlike the piece that exceeded half a million dollars, this time they have not been able to verify that Rush’s signature is authentic. Despite this, the bidding is currently over $200,000, as many collectors wish to own a Black Lotus, an item so rare that its sale is far from commonplace. Therefore, it is possible that it will end up approaching the current record price or, if there is a lot of demand, it will manage to surpass it.
The magic of Black Lotus is its usefulness when it comes to play. In addition to not consuming mana, something essential to dictate which is the best strategy to follow in each turn, this card allowed us to add three mana of any color to our reserve, a condition that gives the possibility to use the most powerful deeds quickly. For this reason, its use is prohibited in tournaments and official competitions, a situation that has raised the price of this item even more.
