The phenomenon of the Backrooms, which began in May 2019 on 4chan, has evolved into a popular concept of collective horror on the internet. The central idea revolves around a vast labyrinth of empty rooms eternally lit by fluorescent lights, generating a sense of unease and discomfort. Originally, a user shared an image of an apparently mundane space, but it quickly transformed into a terrifying setting thanks to the community narrative that has been established over the years.
A form of terror born on the Internet
Now, this concept has transcended the digital realm and has reached Hollywood, with the studio A24, known for its focus on niche horror films, announcing a movie based on the Backrooms. The film will be directed by Kane Parsons, creator of the popular short series on YouTube about this chilling universe. A24 has recently released the first trailer for the movie, which presents a cryptic and esoteric atmosphere, filled with scenes of rooms that seem to have no end, which has generated significant interest among horror enthusiasts.
In the Parsons series, various interpretations of the Backrooms myth are explored, including the presence of a secret federal organization and mysterious entities lurking in the endless hallways. The community has debated the existence of multiple “floors” within the Backrooms, each with distinct characteristics and inhabitants, which adds depth to this narrative. Although the original series focuses on a single unsettling space, the creative contributions of fans have expanded the lore, allowing each person to interpret the concept in their own way.
With the scheduled release of the movie, both the loyal followers of the series and new viewers are expected to delve into a unique and terrifying cinematic experience that could redefine contemporary horror.
