Adobe adds external AI to Creative Cloud: benefits, changes, and what to expect next

In recent years, Adobe has incorporated generative artificial intelligence into its programs, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and many others. All of this has been made possible thanks to the development of Adobe Firefly, the family of models from Adobe that allows us to create images, vectors, and even video.

During the celebration of Adobe MAX 2025, Adobe took a further step in its commitment to AI with the announcement of its collaboration with Google, OpenAI, and other companies. From now on, Creative Cloud subscribers will have access to a selection of generative models from these companies.

Adobe Firefly: the ultimate creative studio

Developed by Adobe, Adobe Firefly is a set of generative models that help us create various types of content, as mentioned at the beginning. In addition to its power and capability, one of the key points of Firefly is that the models have been trained with licensed data to avoid copyright issues.

In the case of images, for example, images from Adobe Stock were used, which are appropriately licensed for model training. This allows the generated content to be used commercially with complete confidence. Additionally, when you create something with Firefly, verifiable metadata (such as date and model used) is associated.

As a novelty, within Adobe Firefly, we can experiment with other third-party models, such as Gemini, GPT Image, Veo, and more. To switch between models, go to the Adobe Firefly website, navigate to General Settings, and select the desired model. You can change them in Text to Image, Text to Video, and Firefly Boards.

The variety of models will enable you to achieve different types of results, even with the same prompt. The ones currently available are:

  • Gemini 2.5 Flash Image (Nano Banana): You can use it within Text to Image, Firefly Boards, and even Adobe Express.
  • Flux 1.1 and Flux.1 Kontext by Blackforest Labs: It will help you generate high-resolution images and is available in Firefly Boards and Text to Image.
  • Luma AI Ray 3: With this model, you can generate cinematic-quality content when editing video within Firefly.
  • GPT Image by OpenAI: You can generate highly accurate images based on your descriptions, as well as images with a considerable amount of realism. It is available in Firefly Boards and Text-to-Image.
  • ElevenLabs: This model will help you create quite realistic narrations for your videos within Adobe Firefly.

Adobe Firefly within Creative Cloud

Currently, many of the programs in Creative Cloud come standard with Firefly, as well as with these third-party models. Within Photoshop, for example, one of the functions that uses these models is Generative Fill. By using it, we can add, remove, or extend parts of an image by describing the desired action.

  • To use Generative Fill, first use a selection tool. Both the magic wand and the rectangular marquee will work for you.
  • Then, use the tool to select the area you want to modify, and add or remove any elements as needed.
  • Select the “Generative Fill” button, which will appear in the contextual toolbar. If you don’t see that toolbar, click on Window > Contextual Task Bar.
  • Alternatively, you can also go to Edit > Generative Fill.
  • To use other third-party models, click on Generative Fill and then select the Firefly symbol (the logo can be read as “Fi”). Here you can choose which model to use; Adobe allows you to choose between different versions of Firefly, FLUX Kontext Pro, and Gemini 2.5 from Google.

In Illustrator, we can also generate vector graphics through text using the Generate Vectors tool.

  • Inside Illustrator, click on the Direct Selection tool. You can use the “A” key as a shortcut.
  • Select the part of the canvas where you want to generate the vector. Then, go to the Quick Actions panel and click on Generate Vectors.

These are just some of the many actions we can take with Firefly from the Adobe programs. Experiment with them to incorporate them into your work routine.
