The CEO of Build a Rocket Boy, Mark Gerhard, has claimed to have “overwhelming evidence of organized espionage and corporate sabotage” that affected the launch of his game MindsEye, and is seeking legal action accordingly. Gerhard has stated that what happened goes beyond normal operational challenges and involved the intervention of external actors who attempted to harm the launch. However, this is not the first time the CEO has mentioned such claims; he had previously indicated that a concerted campaign had been directed against the game, including the use of “bot farms” to spread negative comments.

Criticism of the studio’s management has also arisen from within, as several MindsEye developers have pointed out significant issues such as the exhausting “brutal crunch,” poor management, and a lack of coherent direction in the project. These opinions suggest that the game’s failure cannot be solely attributed to external sabotage. Amid these tensions, the company has been forced to impose another round of layoffs, exacerbating the labor situation in the sector.
For its part, the publisher IO Interactive has dismissed the sabotage accusations and expressed doubts about future collaborations with Build a Rocket Boy, highlighting that its experience with MindsEye has been disappointing. The game has received negative reviews, being considered low quality, which is evident in a gameplay teaser that has been described as poorly made.
The controversy intensifies as an undetermined number of employees face the uncertainty of unemployment, making it clear that, in this case, the poor performance of the game has had significant repercussions on the developer community.
