An existential question for Star Wars fans.

Disney Plus is going through a complex period that could shape the platform’s future. However, it still has new series that might make 2023 end up not being as bad as it has been so far. One of them is Loki, the series starring the God of Mischief, which enters its second season. And the most anticipated one this year is Ahsoka, the new Star Wars series set to premiere on August 23rd.
Starring a character well-known to fans of the saga thanks to the animated series The Clone Wars, the series will follow, this time in live action, the story of one of the most beloved Jedi in all of Star Wars: Ahsoka Tano. We already saw the protagonist in a cameo role in the second season of The Mandalorian, portrayed by the brilliant Rosario Dawson, but her story is much longer in animation.
As a character so familiar to Star Wars fans, the anticipation for the series couldn’t be higher—although the same was true for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and that didn’t end very well. But this has also raised questions for less familiar followers of the franchise or those who simply hadn’t seen Ahsoka before. Is it necessary to watch the previous series in which she appears to understand her story?
A series for all audiences
Dave Filoni, the creator of Ahsoka Tano and the preceding series in which she appears, has made it very clear that the new Star Wars series can be followed without any issue even if you haven’t seen Clone Wars and Rebels. As it is a new phase in the cinematic universe they are creating, the adventure will be independent and will allow you to get to know the character from a different perspective.
In this way, it seems that it won’t be necessary to watch anything else about Ahsoka before watching the series. We can get hooked on this story and get to know its characters from scratch. The context will be sufficient in the live-action series so that you don’t need to know about her previous adventures. Although, of course, there are so many cameos and hidden details… that it’s highly recommended to do so.
Personally, I believe that it’s not necessary to watch anything else about Ahsoka’s story to catch up with the series. However, I also think that both Clone Wars and Rebels are two of the best products ever made in the Star Wars universe, and for that reason, it’s highly recommended to give them a look. Besides providing context to her story, it will help to better understand the current state of the universe.
And the series that does seem more necessary due to its current stage is The Mandalorian. Ahsoka already appeared in this series, and Filoni’s plans involve bringing everything together in a major event that integrates all the characters, so it would be good to watch The Mandalorian before watching Ahsoka.
Who is Ahsoka Tano?
But if you want to learn more about Ahsoka Tano before watching the series and don’t have time to delve into the previous shows, here’s a summary of who this character is, her main traits, and why she’s beloved in the Star Wars universe:
Ahsoka Tano belongs to the Togruta species and is a Jedi known for her courage, wisdom, and the evolution she has undergone throughout the saga. Created by George Lucas, she was introduced in the series Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2008 and quickly became a beloved figure for her charisma and lightsaber combat skills.
Ahsoka was the padawan of the revered Jedi Master Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars. Her character, therefore, grew in complexity as she faced challenges and ethical dilemmas on the battlefield and explored her own identity. Ahsoka earned her place among fans by showcasing her combat prowess, wit, and ability to make tough decisions.
After her dramatic departure from the Jedi Order, unjustly accused of treason, Ahsoka continued her journey in the Star Wars universe. She made a triumphant return in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, where she became a valuable ally in the fight against the Galactic Empire. Her presence in Rebels further deepened her story and her influence on the growing Rebellion.
In addition to her appearances in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, Ahsoka Tano has been a focal point in other Star Wars productions. In The Mandalorian, Ahsoka was portrayed for the first time by Rosario Dawson, marking her debut in the live-action universe. Her involvement in the series added a significant link between various plotlines and made it clear that she would be pivotal to the future of Star Wars.
