Ahsoka’s Unique Lightsabers: Exploring the Significance of the White Blades

Ahsoka is on everyone’s lips. The new Disney Plus series is arriving this Wednesday, and the anticipation couldn’t be higher. While Star Wars continues to thrive as one of Disney’s most successful franchises, it has experienced several ups and downs in recent years, especially due to J.J. Abrams’ last film. However, thanks to Dave Filoni and his determination to explore the post-original trilogy era, Star Wars manages to stay afloat.

The Mandalorian is the best example of this, being the most successful series. But now, all eyes are on Ahsoka, a series starring the character introduced in live action in this same show, and whom many already knew from The Clone Wars and Rebels. Since Ahsoka Tano emerged into the mainstream, however, many have wondered why her lightsabers are white and not the usual blue or green. And we have the answer to this question.

The result of the Force

While there are reasons why Jedi and Sith lightsabers come in different colors, there have also been some curious exceptions throughout the history of Star Wars, such as Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber, which is due to Samuel L. Jackson’s personal preference for the color. However, Ahsoka’s case does have an explanation, and it’s quite interesting.

When she was the Padawan of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano had a regular Jedi lightsaber. However, when she had to leave the Order and go into hiding to avoid being targeted, things changed. In the novel “Star Wars: Ahsoka” by E.K. Johnston, it’s explained how the former Jedi went into hiding during the rise of the Empire. To power her lightsabers, she stole power crystals from the Sith, which were red in color.

To avoid having red lightsabers, Ahsoka realigned these crystals using the Force and her light side, but due to their origin from dark energy, they turned white as a result. The essence of their significance is that, despite using the Force, Ahsoka is not part of the Jedi Order, and thus finds herself in a colorless limbo.
