Since Apple released the AirTag in April 2021, all users were completely impressed with its functionality and great precision. So much so, that as a device, it has hardly shown any rumors of a renewal. It is now, more than two years later, that we are starting to consider the possibility of AirTag 2.

Improved accuracy thanks to new chips

Renowned Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, has shared information that hints at when we might see a second generation of this device. According to Kuo, it is likely that Apple’s suppliers will begin mass production of the second-generation AirTag in the fourth quarter of 2024. Although this date is still more than a year away, the prospect of an improved AirTag has already generated excitement and speculation in the tech community.

What we know so far is that the new AirTag will have better integration with the upcoming Apple Vision Pro. This suggests that Apple is looking to strengthen the spatial computing ecosystem by allowing the AirTag and Vision Pro to interact and provide a more immersive and connected experience. The exact nature of this interaction remains a mystery, but considering Apple’s focus on augmented reality and the capabilities of the existing AirTag, the possibilities are vast.

The current AirTag is equipped with Apple’s U1 chip, which uses ultra-wideband technology for spatial awareness. This technology enables precise tracking, displaying the distance and direction to an AirTag with great accuracy. In this regard, Kuo has mentioned that the iPhone 15 will likely feature an improved U1 chip. This leads to the speculation that Apple may also be planning an enhanced U2 chip for both the second-generation iPhone and AirTag.

Absolutely, an improved U2 chip in the AirTag 2 could potentially bring even more precise tracking capabilities and additional features that we haven’t seen before. While the wait for AirTag 2 may seem long, it’s highly likely that we will see more rumors and leaks in the coming months. We’ll keep an eye out for any hints or clues that reveal more about the capabilities and features of this device.
