This year’s San Diego Comic-Con has already taken place, and as usual in each edition, major studios have used the opportunity to announce their geekiest novelties. From Amazon Prime Video to HBO Max and Netflix, the leading platforms have used their spaces to release new trailers, posters, and updates.
Undoubtedly, it has been a quite eventful year, filled with all kinds of novelties. From Gen V, the highly anticipated spin-off of The Boys, to the latest season of Pokémon, along with other exciting announcements like the upcoming season of Invincible or The Walking Dead video game, Comic-Con has once again been a treat for fans. Below, we present the main highlights announced at this event.
The second season of Invincible already has an official poster
Invincible, the animated series on Amazon Prime Video based on Robert Kirkman’s comics, was a big hit when it premiered in 2021. Since then, we have been eagerly waiting to learn more about the future of the series, but so far, we had only received a small trailer that didn’t reveal much about what we would see.
However, during San Diego Comic-Con, the platform took the opportunity to release a poster for the second season. And here, we can finally see more about what’s coming: the characters that will appear, the new role of the protagonist, and what we can expect to encounter.
The Walking Dead: Betrayal – The series moves to video games
One of the most memorable video games from the former company Telltale Games is the one that adapted Robert Kirkman’s comic series, The Walking Dead. On television, the franchise was incredibly successful, and now it’s making a return to video games with Betrayal, a new and highly anticipated title.
In The Walking Dead: Betrayal, players will confront a multiplayer online world where they must survive the undead while cooking, crafting, and communicating with different groups. The game is set to release later this year and will be exclusively available on PC via Steam. A closed beta test is scheduled for August 10th.
Gen V, the spin-off of The Boys, arrives on September 29
Another exciting announcement from Amazon Prime Video is Gen V, the highly anticipated spin-off series of The Boys that will serve as a complement to the main series and further explore the world created by Garth Ennis. The series will have a college-themed storyline but will continue with the bloody and intense tone of the original.
During Comic-Con, Amazon Prime Video released a new poster and provided an official release date: Gen V will premiere on September 29th with three episodes. The season finale is scheduled for November 3rd.
Borderlands movie coming out next year
In 2015, Lionsgate announced that Borderlands, the iconic action-packed first-person shooter video game series, would be adapted into a film written and directed by Eli Roth. Until now, not much else had been revealed, but they took advantage of Comic-Con to announce its release date.
The Borderlands movie will hit theaters on August 9, 2024, although at this point, we only have a poster giving us a glimpse of what it will be like: there is no cast chosen or any other details yet… but it looks promising for what they can do with this IP.
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake already has a trailer and release date
One of the novelties of Max, the new platform that arises from the rebranding of HBO, is the spin-off of Adventure Time starring the characters Fiona and Cake. During Comic-Con, the VOD service premiered the first trailer of the series. Moreover, they revealed the release date: the new series will be launched on August 31 of this year.
This comes along with many other animated series announced by Max. The platform aims to revitalize this aspect of its production and specialize in animation as well. This way, it can once again compete against Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in this regard.
Ash and Pikachu’s Pokémon finale coming to Netflix soon
In Japan, Pokémon has already bid a final farewell to Ash and Pikachu to make way for new protagonists in the series. However, in the rest of the world, we have not yet officially witnessed how Ash becomes a World Champion and concludes his story.
This will change next September. Netflix has announced that on September 8th, the platform will premiere the final of the series “Pokémon Ultimate Journeys,” in which Ash finally fulfills his promise to become a champion and reach the pinnacle with his Pikachu.
More than 20 exclusive minutes of the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie
Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies have showcased over 20 minutes of footage from the upcoming animated film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.” The movie is set to hit theaters on August 2nd. It’s evident that they have drawn inspiration from the animated film trend seen in movies like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to bring back their iconic characters in this new production.
Nickelodeon has acquired the rights to 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The most iconic series of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ever created is undoubtedly the 1987 series, which left a lasting impression on an entire generation and made these anthropomorphic characters incredibly popular. During the panel for the new movie, Nickelodeon has confirmed that they have acquired the rights to all 193 episodes of the original series. This means they can air the episodes once again on the channel.
Harley Quinn Season 4 Trailer Arrives
One series that has been successful on HBO Max for years is Harley Quinn, an animated production starring Kaley Cuoco (in the voice role), showcasing the independence of the Gotham villain after breaking away from her toxic relationship with the Joker. During Comic-Con, HBO Max took the opportunity to unveil a new trailer for the fourth season of the series, featuring Nightwing as well. The creators have humorously mentioned that they had to enlarge Nightwing’s backside due to popular demand.
New Marvel’s Spider-Man 2-Themed PlayStation 5 and New DualSense Controller Announced
When it comes to video games, Sony didn’t want to miss the opportunity to have so many comic book fans gathered, and during the San Diego Comic-Con, they took advantage of the event to announce something new that will come alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the sequel to the video game scheduled to release on October 20, 2023.
Specifically, Sony has announced a new Spider-Man-themed design for PlayStation 5 to coincide with this launch. They have also introduced a matching DualSense controller for the new console. Undoubtedly, a perfect complement for Spidey and company fans.
