Apple is back on top: the world’s most valuable company again

Apple ended Friday back at the top spot as the world’s most valuable public company. Its market cap closed around $4.9 trillion, just ahead of Nvidia at $4.8 trillion. It’s the first time Apple has been back at No. 1 since April 2025.

The move came from both sides. Apple kept climbing, while Nvidia dropped 3.5% in a chip sell-off that left the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index 19% below its recent highs. Apple is now up about 23% this year, putting it ahead of the rest of the Magnificent Seven. Investors seem to be leaning on a few things at once: steady confidence in Apple’s hardware business, reports that the iPhone 17 was the best-selling smartphone in the world in Q1 2026, Apple’s strongest second quarter ever for iPhone shipments, approval for on-device features in China, and an installed base of more than 2.5 billion devices that can keep feeding software and services revenue.

This change at the top says something. Traders look to be rotating away from chip suppliers and toward devices, services, and the kind of ecosystem that’s hard to leave once you’re in it. Apple looks like the more defensive name because it isn’t tied as tightly to heavy spending cycles. Nvidia still has a strong data-center growth story, but it had already spent nearly a year at No. 1 and was the first company to clear both $4 trillion and $5 trillion.
