The anticipation grows around Apple, as it is rumored that soon — and by soon, we mean today — they could unveil the third generation of the popular Apple Pencil. While awaiting a possible announcement via press release, let’s gather everything known so far about this upcoming version of the company’s stylus.

Magnetic tips: a different pencil for every occasion

One of the most anticipated features of the Apple Pencil 3 is the introduction of magnetic tips for easy interchangeability. Users will find tips designed for various activities such as drawing, sketching, or writing, available in different thicknesses and shapes.

For instance, a fine tip would be ideal for writing, while those who draw might prefer a thicker or differently shaped tip. Apple could even introduce a brush-shaped tip for specific artistic drawing or oriental calligraphy.

The less exciting option for this change would be if the tips remained the same, and Apple only simplified the attachment mechanism, making it easier to replace them when they wear out.

Changes in design and colors: glossy finish and black

In 2021, a supposed image of a shorter third-generation Apple Pencil with a glossy finish leaked. This model also appeared to have a slightly larger tip, aligning with the mentioned interchangeable magnetic tips.

In a similar vein, a year earlier, there was speculation that the next Apple Pencil might be available in white and black. This rumor emerged in 2020, so its accuracy is questionable at this point. Especially considering that the majority of the company’s accessories, such as AirPods, continue to be exclusively white.

With USB-C and a single model

Currently, Apple sells two models of the Apple Pencil. The original model, compatible with the education iPad, and the second-generation one that works with the rest of the iPad lineup. With the transition to USB-C that we are seeing in the iPhone 15 and with all iPads now using this connector, an update to the Apple Pencil is more than logical to avoid the need for a USB-C to Lightning adapter for the original Apple Pencil.

Apple could design a third-generation model that is compatible with all iPads, or perhaps offer charging via USB-C and make it magnetic as well. Alternatively, they might release a new version of the original Apple Pencil with a USB-C connector.
