One VR team was cut as Apple eyes smart glasses

Apple has reportedly laid off about 60 employees tied to its Vision Products Group, according to AppleInsider this week, and that puts fresh attention on where Apple Vision Pro goes from here. AppleInsider says one entire VR development team was cut. Other follow-up reports put the total closer to 60, and Apple hasn’t publicly confirmed any of it.
The cuts seem to point to a change in direction. Apple looks to be easing back from expensive, niche VR hardware and shifting more of its focus to lighter smart glasses, not dropping spatial computing outright.
Vision Pro launched with sky-high expectations. Reviewers praised the display quality and the technical ambition behind it. But the same problems kept coming up: the price was high, the design was bulky, the app ecosystem was still limited, demand looked weak, everyday use cases felt thin, and the hardware still seems too heavy for mainstream buyers.
This also doesn’t read like a sudden retreat. Apple’s Vision Products Group was reportedly split up more than a year ago and folded into broader hardware and software teams, so the latest cuts look more like restructuring that kept going than a sharp reversal.
If you’ve been following Apple’s wearable plans, this report matters. Apple still seems likely to keep supporting visionOS, but its next move looks more careful and more wearable, closer to Meta’s smart-glasses direction. You can buy Apple Vision Pro through Apple.
