Blizzard Entertainment has taken a firm stance against the use of generative artificial intelligence in the development of its video games, reaffirming that currently no AI-generated content is being used in its projects. Overwatch director Aaron Keller expressed to GameSpot that the team does not feel “comfortable” presenting “AI-generated content” to players, while John Hight, former director of World of Warcraft, also confirmed that generative AI is not employed in the MMO.
They are against the use of AI
In a recent interview with Game Informer, the lead composer of WoW: Midnight, Leo Kaliski, added that his team feels fortunate not to rely on generative AI for the creation of the soundtrack, focusing on creating music that they find interesting. These statements suggest a commitment from Blizzard to prioritize handcrafted and original content creation.
The president of Blizzard, Johanna Faries, has pointed out the existence of a central governance team focused on AI, suggesting careful management of this resource in the development cycles. However, unlike other companies that have taken an aggressive stance towards the use of AI, Blizzard seems to allow its various teams to decide their approach, which could be indicative of creative flexibility within the company.
Despite this autonomy, it is important to consider Microsoft’s interest, the parent company of Blizzard, in incorporating generative artificial intelligence into its products, which could potentially influence Blizzard’s perspective on this technology in the future. Rumors suggest that recent unionization efforts within Blizzard could play a crucial role in opposing the invasion of AI in their creative developments.
