One of the most intriguing topics in the video game industry is the evolution of the Pokémon franchise, developed by Game Freak. Although the series has introduced over 1,000 creatures over the years, the concern about whether the studio will run out of ideas seems unfounded. According to Ken Sugimori, the art director of the studio, the limitation of 100 new Pokémon per release is not due to a lack of creativity, but rather related to the length of the development cycle and game balance.
It is unsustainable to add more Pokémon all at once
Game Freak maintains a meticulous approach to adding new types of Pokémon to preserve balance in battles. Types like Steel and Dark, introduced in previous generations, were designed to counteract type imbalances that existed before, such as Psychic, which dominated in the early versions. The current complexity of the game, accentuated by online competition and access to shared strategies, makes balance increasingly critical.
With the recent presentation of the starter Pokémon from Pokémon Winds and Waves, a new generation of creatures is on the horizon, indicating that Game Freak remains committed to innovation. As the studio continues to seek new ideas, it is also confirmed that they will not rush to release them excessively, prioritizing quality and gameplay over quantity.
