At Sony they’ve finally acknowledged that the Spider-Man spin-offs were a disaster. “The audience wasn’t satisfied”

At the height of the superhero movie boom, when it seemed you couldn’t release one without it being a hit, Sony decided to launch, with more greed than talent, its villain-packed Spider-Man Universe. And, in its defense, it started off working with its take on Venom before it began to go off the rails: when Morbius became a meme, things started to fall apart. When Madame Web came out, the derailment was inevitable.

It’s morbin’ time!

In total there were 6 movies, 3 of which lost a huge amount of money, and now at Sony they’re trying to find someone to blame. As if creating a Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man weren’t enough. In the end, the audience didn’t like them enough. Whether that’s a fair assessment, who knows. That’s impossible to say. The audience is the boss, and it didn’t respond. It’s as simple as that”, says Tom Rothman, head of Sony Studios

It’s fine, because a large part of the profits from the Spider-Man movies go back to them, not just Marvel, and by now they’ve already managed to recoup what they lost. Unless, well, they screw up again: “Right now, we don’t know. We never saw it as the Sony-Marvel Universe. We saw them as worthwhile movies about other characters. Right now there aren’t any in active development”. So we’ll be left without knowing what was going on with that post-credits scene with Vulture for no reason at all. Well, what a shame.

That means we’ll be left without seeing El Muerto (a character based on a single comic that was going to star Bad Bunny), Agent Venom, Silver Sable, the Sinister Six, Jackpot, Silver Sable, Nightwatch, Spider-Woman, Hypno-Hustler (I swear I’m not making him up), Mysterio and even Aunt May. Yes, all of this was at one stage of development or another. Good thing we were spared, huh?
