Atlas, OpenAI’s browser, disappears this weekend: what to do to save your data
Export bookmarks manually before August 9; chats stay in ChatGPT

OpenAI will shut down ChatGPT Atlas on August 9, 2026. With this move, the company is moving browsing to the ChatGPT desktop app and its dedicated extension, which means we should save our data before Sunday, if we want to keep it.
What data to save before the shutdown
Bookmark export will be manual. To keep our saved pages we have to open Atlas’s bookmark manager, choose export, and save the result as an HTML file. It’s also a good idea to copy the tab URLs and keep the pages we need, which can save us time later.
The history of ChatGPT conversations is stored separately, so we’ll still find our chats in the account we’ve been using with Atlas. If we want, we’ll also be able to export cookies, but they should be treated as sensitive information, although it’s generally easier to simply sign back into the services we use with another browser.
The ChatGPT app takes over
With this change, OpenAI is steering users toward ChatGPT for Mac, whose browsing already integrates tabs, downloads, sessions, extensions, and a persistent state system. It’s an evolution of the desktop app and its integrations, since it combines more features than Atlas had in the app we already use.
For tasks tied to Chrome, the extension will preserve our profile and the open tabs. Once Atlas is gone, the priority is clear: export today and continue from ChatGPT and its next iterations.
