Baki-Dou is now on Netflix: Baki opens with 3.4 million views

Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai has landed on Netflix, giving Keisuke Itagaki’s long-running Baki franchise another push onto the global stage. The martial-arts manga and anime series has been around for more than 30 years, and it’s still finding new audiences.

Netflix has had a lot to do with that. Its exclusive seasons and worldwide same-day releases helped move Baki from cult Japanese manga territory into the mainstream, and producer Kei Watabiki says that kind of reach gave fans a chance to find the series at the same time.

The newest installment started strong, pulling in 3.4 million views in its first week and climbing to No. 2 on Netflix’s non-English TV chart, based on the platform’s weekly Top 10 numbers.

If action anime is already in your regular rotation, this one’s easy to recommend. Netflix also gave the team room to stay faithful to Baki’s exaggerated musculature, warped faces, surreal impact, violence, body horror, absurd combat logic, and the graphic “Most Evil Death Row Convicts” arc, while still making it work for a mainstream streaming audience.

The franchise’s dead-serious narration, plus the flood of memes, clips, and reaction posts, helped drive the manga past 100 million copies sold, at least by the franchise’s own count.

You can stream Baki-Dou, along with follow-ups like Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura, on Netflix worldwide. At this point, the franchise doesn’t feel revived so much as bigger than it’s ever been.
