EA’s first person shooter Battlefield 4 will launch with 10 maps and 7 game modes for the online multiplayer part of the game.
Battlefield 3 had an impressively strong online line-up at launch, with 9 maps and 5 modes, so you can see the next sequel is going to be bigger still. Rush, Domination, Squad Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Conquest modes make a return in Battlefield 4, and are joined by new modes Defuse and Obliteration.
Obliteration sees two teams pursuing a randomly spawned bomb, and attempting to to detonate it in one othe opposition’s military installations. This means each team will be changing from offensive to defensive play throughout the game, and there will be a lot of movement around the maps as they pursue the bombs and defend their installations. Less has been revealed about Defuse, but developer DICE is promising more details soon.
Dice published a video of Obliteration gameplay from Gamescom, which as well as showcasing the frenetic pace of the game mode, demonstrated how much has changed since Battlefield 3. The sea now has big waves, and everything is much more destructible.
The new Frostbite 3 engine is really impressive – and makes what Dice calls ‘levolution’ possible. This is when massive events occur, like huge buildings being destroyed that radically change the map you are playing on.
