As announced late last month, Blackberry Messenger (BBM) is finally available for Android users running Android Gingerbread 2.3.3.

The outdated Gingerbread edition of Android still runs on 21% of Android devices, or nearly 175 million smartphones, making it an attractive market for BBM’s developer, RIM. When the messaging app first launched on iOS and Android late last year, it saw an immediate surge in downloads. Since then, the app has been less popular than expected. Adding a version for Gingerbread could once again help boost the app’s popularity.
