bitdefender antivirus free iconBitdefender, the digital security firm that makes antivirus programs for Windows, has released a free antivirus application for Android called Bitdefender Antivirus Free. The app will protect against applications that contain viruses as well as other cyber threats. Bitdefender claims that the application will have minimal effect on battery life, even though it will be running in the background.

While the app is free, there are a few major caveats. Antivirus Free will only contain a malware scanner so free users will be missing out on website security, anti-theft, phone locator, and remote locking/wiping features. Still, the app will tap into Bitdefender’s cloud for up to date virus definitions. Bitdefender Antivirus Free also lacks real-time protection, only scanning apps as they download. There’s no phone locator backup feature, both of which Lookout Security & Antivirus offers for free.

Many of the malware that targets Android phones allows attackers to steal personal information from phones. Bitdefender’s strong antivirus engine is used in different security apps on Windows so we have high hopes for the Android version. While the Antivirus Free is quite limited, it lets users test out Bitdefender’s virus scanning abilities before deciding whether to pay for Bitdefender’s premium services. Bitdefender Security & Antivirus has a free 14 day trial if you want to try out the company’s more premium mobile security features.
