Borderlands has a box office deficit of -100 million dollars

Borderlands has not started off on the right foot. The box office has had no respite from the bad streak that began with the disastrous reviews received by the specialized press. Furthermore, official numbers show that in the United States, Borderlands has only managed to raise 8.8 million dollars.

Things don’t get much better outside of the USA. The film, directed by Eli Roth, has had to settle for $7.7 million, bringing its total box office to $16.5 million after its first weekend. These are terrible numbers for a film that cost around $150 million to produce.

According to Variety, fortunately for Lionsgate, they have already managed to recover almost 60% of the costs due to international pre-sales. However, the poor numbers do not indicate that things will improve from here.

Aside from not meeting expectations, the version that is in theaters also deviates greatly from the original vision. Jimmy O’Dee, stunt coordinator on Borderlands, explained in Screen Rant that originally, the movie was intended for adults: “We were shooting an R-rated movie […] So we were blowing people’s heads off. And cutting off feet.” Would the reception have improved if the original vision had been respected?
