Bruce Willis, who has been away from the film industry due to his recent diagnosis of aphasia, has shown that his legacy endures despite his retirement. The movie Persecución mortal, released in 1993 and known in English as Striking Distance, has unexpectedly resurfaced on the streaming platform Netflix, ranking as the number 1 film in 14 countries, which has surprised both critics and fans.
Bruce Willis continues to dominate even without new movies
Deadly Pursuit tells the story of Tom Hardy, a police officer looked down upon by his colleagues after the arrest of his cousin, a corrupt partner. The plot thickens when Hardy faces a dangerous psychopath who, to his dismay, seems to be linked to his own department. Despite its intriguing premise, the film was not well received upon its release, achieving only 20% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, both Willis and director Rowdy Herrington have expressed disdain for the film, describing it in unflattering terms.
Despite this poor critical performance, Deadly Pursuit proved to be a commercial success, grossing $77 million worldwide against a budget of $30 million. However, for years, it had remained forgotten, far from being considered one of Willis’s standout works. Its new popularity on Netflix highlights how streaming platforms can revive titles that would otherwise have been overlooked.
As Bruce Willis’s fans resign themselves to the fact that there will be no new releases, the unexpected success of Deadly Pursuit reminds us that cinema, even the less recognized, can find new audiences and meanings in the changing context of digital entertainment.
