Nowadays, the visual novel Tsukihime is easily accessible through various digital stores, but obtaining an original copy from 1999 has become an extremely difficult task. Only 50 copies were produced during the Comiket 57 convention in Tokyo, which has caused its value to increase significantly over time. This scarce item was sold at an initial price of just 100 yen, but its rarity has led those fortunate enough to own a copy to consider it an invaluable treasure.
A video game closer to being lost
Recently, a user known as Keripo shared his unfortunate experience of receiving one of these extremely rare copies. In a heartbreaking account, he showed an image of his completely destroyed floppy disk, the plastic casing shattered and a folded promotional poster, all caused by the customs inspection process in the United States. Despite the protective measures used during shipping, such as the use of cardboard and bubble wrap, customs destroyed the copy of Tsukihime, leading Keripo to declare that he was literally crying.
Keripo is not only dealing with a personal loss, but has also decided to file a complaint for the damages suffered to his copy. In a video he has shared, he details the defects, which has sparked the community’s interest in his case. Additionally, he has provided hints that his copy is legal, emphasizing the artisanal production process carried out by TYPE-MOON, known for being a small group of otakus who sought to promote their first work at that time.
The situation of Keripo resonates beyond a simple individual loss; it represents an irreparable historical damage within the video game industry, reflecting the delicate balance between the preservation of video game culture and the disadvantages that can arise in international transport.
