The recent unveiling of the iPhone 15 has sparked a flurry of opinions and reactions. Apple, true to its tradition, has introduced a series of innovations that undoubtedly make us consider upgrading our device. But is it really worth making the leap from the iPhone 14 to the iPhone 15?

Most likely yes, although it depends on many factors

It’s a complex question, so let’s first provide some context and analyze the specifications. In terms of the display, Apple has maintained the quality of its Super Retina XDR, and this is complemented by the debut of the “Dynamic Island” on all devices of the new generation, as well as the highly useful action button that the Pro models enjoy.

One of the most noticeable changes is the chip. The iPhone 15 Pro models are equipped with the A17 Pro chip, while the entry-level iPhone 15 features the A16 Bionic, a generational leap from the A15 Bionic of the iPhone 14. Regarding connectivity, the shift from Lightning to USB-C in the new generation represents a significant step forward in terms of compatibility and speed, especially with the 10 Gbps on the Pro models.

In terms of photography, there’s a significant evolution. The Pro models retain the 48 MP main lens with minor improvements across all lenses, while the basic iPhone 15 has upgraded from a 12 MP main lens to 48 MP. Additionally, zoom levels are a factor to consider for photography enthusiasts. When you add improved and automatic portrait mode, the new 24 MP photo format, and other enhancements, we’re looking at one of the most interesting aspects of the new iPhones.

Will I be able to recover the initial investment?

Given what we’ve discussed, the decision to upgrade becomes clearer, and a question arises: will you recover the initial investment? It’s clear that everyone will have their own set of values, but in general, it’s easy to assert that upgrading from an iPhone 12 or a similar model is quite appealing. The improvements in the cameras, the additional battery life, and the increased power are factors that support the change.

Beyond the cameras, a compelling argument for the upgrade is the Dynamic Island. Moving from a phone without it to one with it is something to seriously consider. It may seem like a minor detail until you spend some time with this system and realize the impact it has on how we navigate background tasks and the amount of information that can be condensed into such a small space.

That said, it’s essential to consider a crucial factor: recovering the initial amount spent. Selling an iPhone from last year is one thing, doing so with one from two years ago is also relatively easy, but selling one from four years ago is a different story altogether. While it’s true that iPhones hold their value well in the second-hand market, it naturally depreciates. The price you can get from trading in a more recent phone undoubtedly helps with the purchase of the new one.

This is something we need to assess personally and based on how well we can sell our current iPhone before considering a new iPhone 15. Finding the balance between regular upgrades and investment recovery will vary from person to person, but it’s essential to keep in mind to avoid ending up with an iPhone that has no resale value.

Nevertheless, the iPhone 15 is a very, very compelling phone. Whether we opt for an iPhone 15 Pro Max, the top-tier choice with exceptional battery life and cameras, or go for an iPhone 15 Plus, which is larger but lacks some of the Pro features, we will undoubtedly be pleased with our decision.
