Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops II could hit PS4 and PS5 this July

Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II may be headed to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 as early as this July. That comes from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, who’s built a solid reputation as one of the most reliable insiders in the games business. Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions also seem like a real possibility, especially now that Activision falls under Microsoft’s Xbox umbrella, but so far there’s been no word on those platforms.

If the report is accurate, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II would show up as straight ports of the original releases, not remasters and not remakes. Call of Duty: Black Ops launched in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PC, and it landed right away with both critics and players. That success set up Call of Duty: Black Ops II just two years later, in 2012.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II came to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC, locked in the Black Ops subseries as a long-term part of Call of Duty, and leaned even harder into what would become one of the franchise’s signature modes: Call of Duty Zombies.

A lot of that success came down to the change in setting. Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II shifted to the Cold War, moving between the 1960s and the 1980s, while bringing in non-linear mission design, multiple endings, a darker tone, and time jumps. Add in the story’s complexity, and fans were sold.

The servers for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II are still up today, but a fresh surge of new and returning players would bring the obvious concern: whether they could actually handle it.
