ChatGPT Atlas shuts down: browser tools move to ChatGPT Work

OpenAI pulled ChatGPT Atlas, its standalone Chromium-based browser, on August 9, 2026, less than a year after launching Atlas for macOS in October 2025. Rather than keep Atlas going as a separate app, the company is folding its main features into a rebuilt ChatGPT Work desktop app and a new Google Chrome extension. That puts ChatGPT, Codex, and browser-style task execution under the same roof, so you can still work across apps and sites like Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 without having to switch browsers.

Atlas was built around direct ChatGPT integration and an Agent mode that could take actions for you. But with Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari already baked into most people’s daily routines, OpenAI seems to have decided it had a better shot by bringing AI into products people already know. That lines up with Google’s Gemini-in-Chrome push and Microsoft’s Copilot-in-Edge play, in a market that industry forecasts size at $4.5 billion in 2024 and $76.8 billion by 2034. Browser usage trackers also put Chrome’s share above 68%, and the field already includes Edge, Brave, Opera, Perplexity Comet, and Dia.

If AI tools are part of your everyday workflow, this change will probably sound better than another standalone browser. Even then, privacy issues, prompt injection, and simple reliability problems still make browser assistants hard to trust for sensitive work. Once these replacements are available, you’ll need to move over to ChatGPT Work on desktop or the Google Chrome extension.
