OpenAI updated ChatGPT today with a version for teens ages 13 to 17. Eligible accounts will get it automatically in the existing ChatGPT app and on the web as the rollout reaches more users.
This teen version puts stricter limits on romantic or emotionally intense conversations, cuts back on replies that make ChatGPT sound like it has feelings, and adds stronger protections around mental health, body image, self-harm, and other sensitive subjects. It also includes parental quiet hours, safety alerts for high-risk chats involving things like self-harm or eating disorders, and a new Study Mode that guides students through schoolwork step by step rather than handing over the answer. Pew Research Center says a little over half of U.S. teens have used chatbots for schoolwork, and 12% have used them for emotional support.
If a teen in your house uses ChatGPT a lot, this is probably an update you’ll want. Still, ChatGPT shouldn’t be treated like a counselor, teacher, parent, or friend. Meta and Google are rolling out similar guardrails, but harmful material can still get through, and Common Sense Media still rates ChatGPT as a moderate risk for teens.
