ChatGPT is now a productivity hub: the apps worth downloading

By mid-2026, ChatGPT had turned into something bigger than a chatbot. OpenAI has been reshaping it into a broader productivity hub, one place for file search, meeting summaries, calendar management, document access, and quicker task switching without bouncing between a stack of tabs.

OpenAI says the plugin store it launched in 2023 became the GPT Store, crossed 1,000 plugins by early 2024, and now links ChatGPT with Google Drive, Microsoft 365, Slack, Asana, Canva, Gmail, and Google Calendar. The idea is straightforward: pull in files, draft messages, and sum up long threads without leaving the same interface.

Some of the research points to real productivity gains. MIT found that writing tasks were 40% faster and came out 18% better. Another study reported 59% more documents produced over the course of a workday. OpenAI said that by late 2024, 92% of Fortune 500 companies had integrated ChatGPT. And in a recent hands-on roundup, five tools stood out as actually worth using.

If you already use ChatGPT for work, this shift looks worth a closer look. OpenAI is clearly pushing toward a super-app model, and in July 2026 it rolled out a macOS and Windows desktop app that, by its own account, adds Codex and a Work mode. That said, the usual caveats still apply: outputs can be inaccurate, they can be biased, and ChatGPT still leans toward English-speaking knowledge workers, even though recent reporting says that by mid-2026 most active consumer users were speaking other languages.
