The date’s locked in: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which Universal is calling a “mythic action epic” built around Odysseus, reaches theaters on July 17, 2026, with a London premiere set for July 6. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway plays Penelope. Nolan is producing with Emma Thomas through Syncopy, and the reported budget sits at $250 million.
Damon and Hathaway are joined by Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Nolan is also shooting the whole thing on IMAX 70mm film cameras, which makes The Odyssey the first feature-length movie to use that format all the way through.
What you still don’t have is any official list of the seven mythological creatures in the movie, even though Homer leaves Nolan with no shortage of options. Polyphemus, the Sirens, Scylla, Charybdis, Circe, and plenty of other supernatural threats are right there in the source material, but there’s still no firm breakdown of which beings are definitely in the film, or who might be playing them.
The reporting so far points to a more realistic tactile version of Greek myth, something closer to a historical epic with a Ray Harryhausen touch than to full-on high fantasy. If spectacle matters to you as much as story, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey looks like the kind of movie worth buying a ticket for, especially with scholars already saying it could spark fresh interest in Homer.
You can catch Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in theaters on July 17, 2026.
