How to close apps on iPhone

In our day to day life with the iPhone we use a lot of applications. We open them, we use them, we exit them and we also close them. Apple has designed its software in such a way that it is not necessary to close an application when we are not using it, in fact it is counterproductive. And yet, there will be times when we will need to close an application.

A resource for when it doesn’t work, but not a habit

Most of the applications that are not active remain in a suspended state, without consuming resources of any kind or representing any expense for the battery. Therefore, it is not recommended to close the applications, as this consumes more resources and more battery in the phone by having to reopen them from scratch when we need them.

That said, it is true that there are times when an application of ours may stop responding. In these cases, it is best to force close the application and open it again to make it work properly. Let’s see, therefore, how to close apps on the iPhone.

On iPhones with a physical home button, we will do it like this:

  1. We double-tap the home button.
  2. We look for the application we want to close, scrolling them to the right and left.
  3. We slide up the app until it disappears.

On iPhones without a physical home button, we do it like this:

  1. We slide our finger from the bottommost part of the screen towards the center of the screen, pause for a second in the center of the screen and release.
  2. We look for the application that we want to close, scrolling them to the right and left.
  3. We slide up the app until it disappears.

It is important to emphasize, as we have already said, that it is counterproductive to close applications, unless they have stopped responding. Apple has built in management systems to deal with all the apps we have open on our device since long before the advent of the iPhone 15 or iOS 17 and, therefore, forcing an app to close will not improve battery life. In fact, doing so wastes more battery as it forces the iPhone to load the app again.

Meanwhile, whenever we find an application that is not responding as it should, we can close it to reopen it and use it again. A resource, as we have just seen, as simple and fast as possible.
