‘Coyote vs ACME’ has taken a long time to be released, but according to critics it’s one of the best films of the year

Not so long ago, in the middle of Warner’s internal crisis, they started canceling already finished projects as if there were no tomorrow. Out the window went things like Batgirl or Scoob! Holiday Haunt, which we sadly lost forever, but there was one film in particular that hurt all of us old-school cinephiles right in the heart: Coyote vs ACME. Warner, to save on taxes, said it wouldn’t release the new Looney Tunes movie, until the whole Internet came down on them and they decided to sell it to the highest bidder. And, by the looks of it… thank goodness they did.

Fun ACME-brand reviews

Just being able to see this film at all is already a dream come true, but on top of that, the reviews are getting people really hyped. For example, Next Best Picture highlights that “the fact that the film is not only good enough to make the decision to shelve it seem cowardly and anti-artistic, but that it has gained emotional resonance because of how that drama joins with its own story, is cause for celebration”. Let’s celebrate, then.

Metro, meanwhile, giving it five stars, adds that “it brings back the Looney Tunes successfully and a glorious explosion of crazy energy. Like the best family films, I don’t know if it’s more for kids or for adults… it deserves to be a hit”. AV Club, for its part, says that “it’s a Looney Dark Waters, at once charmingly absurd and shrewdly intelligent, about what it really means to win, all of it wrapped in a live-action world full of references, not very different from our own”.

Not everyone is as positive, but as its 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes indicates, the negative reviews are very few. Screen International says that “its weak script is as flawed as ACME’s cheap contraptions” and Variety adds “Next to the cartoons of old, it feels neutral and timid”. We’ll judge for ourselves on August 28 in the US and September 18 in Spain. Let’s see if this time we can catch that damned Road Runner!
