The first gameplay for Dark Souls 2 has been revealed in a video and interview with games site IGN. Dark Souls, and its predecessor Demon Souls are famous for their relentless difficulty, minimalist plots that are drip fed to players, and epic fantasy environments.

With Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki not involved in the development of Dark Souls 2, many players were understandably worried that his bleak vision might be changed for this sequel. What we can see suggests that the developers are trying to refine what made Dark Souls great, not change anything radically.

The huge success of Dark Souls was a surprise, as games that brutally challenging are a rarity today. Check out the video, and read below for a summary of what we now know about the game.

What we know about Dark Souls 2:

  • Improved graphics; they look cleaner, light is more dynamic and there are wind effects.
  • Combat looks the same, but refined.
  • Bonfires, the check points of Dark Souls, are back.
  • There is more environment damage.
  • There are lots of Dragons. We see them crowding around a bridge, and an attack by a dragon Skeleton.
  • It’s not a revolution, but a development of what made Dark Souls and Demon Souls successful.
  • You will die a lot!
