Death Stranding 2, the sequel to Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed title, has achieved remarkable commercial success since its release. In its first week available on PC, the game sold 425,000 copies, adding to the 1.6 million units sold on PlayStation 5.

This brings the total copies sold to over two million, a significant milestone although still far from the 20 million players who enjoyed the first game.

A game that is selling at a good pace

An interesting aspect of this release is that only nine months have passed since its exclusive debut on PlayStation 5 to its arrival on PC, the shortest interval for a PlayStation title to make this transition, surpassing others like Stellar Blade, which took 14 months.

This move suggests that Sony may be reevaluating its release strategy for prestige games, considering keeping some exclusives on its console while other titles, especially live service ones, move to the PC market.

Interestingly, the release of Death Stranding 2 on PC coincided with an increase in PS5 sales, despite both platforms offering the game at a discounted price. According to Alinea Analytics, sales on the PS5 were double compared to previous identical discounts. This shows that the title has rekindled interest in the console, providing a new context in which Kojima’s work is discussed.

Narratively, the game tackles deep themes such as grief and loss, and the story focuses on the personal growth of Sam, the protagonist. As the player progresses, they will confront the essential question of how to learn to live after loss, an echo of feelings that will resonate with many.
