Blizzard has given a new boost to its popular Action RPG, Diablo IV, with the release of the Lord of Hatred expansion. This content includes the highly anticipated Paladin class and the mysterious region of Skovos, promising to revitalize the gaming experience and open new possibilities for players. However, the company has faced the challenge of satisfying both veterans and those who are just entering the Diablo universe.
Fishing gives life
In conversation with Zaven Haroutunian, associate director of the project, the importance of aspirational content is emphasized. This concept translates into the gradual incorporation of new features to avoid overwhelming players, allowing them to set their own goals within the game. Haroutunian mentions that, through constant feedback from the community, they seek to adjust the mechanics based on the performance of the new features introduced.
One of the most notable surprises in this expansion is the implementation of a fishing system, an activity that, although unexpected, has captured the attention of many players. Haroutunian defends this inclusion as a way to expand the aspirational content of the game, allowing players to find their own sense of achievement outside of traditional challenges. Fishing may sound odd, but there is a strong motivation among players to complete it, he stated, acknowledging the proliferation of memes about it.
Blizzard is adopting a more horizontal approach to content development, aiming to create a more inclusive experience. This means that not all activities have to appeal to all players, which adds a healthy diversity to the game’s offerings. According to Haroutunian, this variability is essential to maintain interest and engagement in the community, reflecting the company’s commitment to listen and evolve with its users.
