Diablo 5 looks more likely now: Diablo 4 tops $1 billion

Blizzard Entertainment still hadn’t announced Diablo 5 as of September 2024. Even so, another sequel feels likely. Diablo 4 launched in June 2023 as Blizzard’s fastest-selling game ever and brought in $666 million in its first five days, according to Blizzard.

By September 2024, Diablo 4 had also reportedly crossed $1 billion in lifetime revenue. Blizzard kept players coming back with Vessel of Hatred, Lord of Hatred, and seasonal updates that gradually worked through the early complaints about progression and the endgame. Around launch, Diablo 4 also became Twitch’s most popular game, based on Twitch viewership data, with English, Korean, and German among the top streaming languages.

Later, Blizzard president Johanna Faries reportedly told staff that Blizzard Entertainment was Xbox’s top-performing studio in fiscal year 2026, with Diablo 4 and its expansions playing a big part in that result. The game’s reach also widened through NetEase-operated servers in mainland China and a Japan launch where the PlayStation 5 version reportedly ranked as the second best-selling retail game in its first week, according to Japanese retail sales data.

If you follow Blizzard Entertainment’s biggest franchises, this is one to keep an eye on. There’s still no official Diablo 5 roadmap, but former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra said in August 2023 that the wait for a possible sequel probably wouldn’t drag on like the decade-plus gaps between the earlier games.
