Do you remember the noise the internet used to make?

Stop what you are doing for three seconds and think about your daily life and tell me what you couldn’t live without, and I’m sure you’ll think the same as me…the Internet.
We can no longer live without the Internet, it has become a massive window, not just to our world but to our universe.
Now we can see what’s happening on the other side of the planet, and we can even look at the landscapes of Mars from the comfort of our computer. Today, it is almost impossible to imagine a world without the internet or, rather, without the World Wide Web. A World Wide Web that is celebrating its anniversary, as it turns 30.
Thinking back, I remember very well the first time I used a browser to start “surfing” the web and heard a sound that today seems almost like something out of a horror movie: it was the sound of the modem.
Much like in that romantic comedy from the late 90s, “You’ve Got Mail,” when my web browser finally connected, the first thing I did was search for what real life was like in the countries that, until then, I only knew from Hollywood. I took my first steps with messaging services that few people know about today, such as ICQ or, of course, one of my favorites, MSN Messenger.
Welcome to Opera Rewind: A journey to your most cherished memories on the web
This year marks another anniversary, that of the Opera browser. To celebrate, they have launched a website Opera Rewind that allows us to remember not only the moments we have in our memories, but also those that have faded over time. Even though they remain in our hearts.
I promise you that this site will make you laugh, or it will do exactly what it did to me: Bring tears to my eyes out of pure nostalgia, and, of course, I was able to remember these moments thanks to someone else celebrating their birthday.
But this isn’t about my own memories; it’s about exploring some moments that will trigger your nostalgia. Who doesn’t remember Grumpy Cat? Maybe only some of us lived through the era of the grumpy cat, but in the end it was a cat that stayed in our memories. Or maybe your memory is the rise of memes and TikToks. Or the era of Vine, the “ancestor” of TikToks, where you only had 6 seconds to show something.
I encourage you to visit this website because, without a doubt, you’re going to find a memory that triggers your childhood nostalgia. Thanks to its interactivity it has done exactly this for me. Being able to simulate putting a floppy disk into a mid-90s computer is something that, depending on your age, will either surprise you or horrify you because of how manual and slow everything was.
You’ll discover not only that life with the Internet is better, but also that with Opera, you have the chance to win a trip to the origins of the Internet. Yes, you can win a trip to Switzerland.
The Prize: A Trip to Switzerland
Yep. The authors of the three best submissions will win a trip to CERN, nestled beneath the Swiss Alps; the literal birthplace of the World Wide Web.
The contest is open right now and closes on March 27th, 2026.
Here’s the drill:
- Visit: www.web-rewind.com
- Explore
- Share: Drop your earliest memory on the submissions page.
The web has grown up. But the feeling of logging on for the very first time? You never forget that.
Dust off your memories and tell us your story.
