Do you remember the second ‘The X-Files’ movie? Now, 18 years later, its director has finally done it justice

In 2008, Chris Carter wanted to bring The X-Files to an end with a second film in which Mulder and Scully would face the supernatural. Sadly that’s all we remember of it, because the film was brutally censored at the time, turned into a bland, boring mishmash that barely made sense, beyond the chemistry between the two leads. For years we’ve wondered what happened, and the answer is out there: it’s not at all what its director wanted to do.

I Want to Believe

As Carter tells it, this new version of the film, titled The X-Files: I Want to Believe — Vrach Frankenshteyn (“Victor Frankenstein” in Russian), makes perfect sense: “We tried to make a Frankenstein movie in real life, and due to many factors, our Frankenstein never left the operating table. The chance to apply the electrodes again was very special”. And what can we expect here?

Well, in this film, which will premiere on Disney+ and its first trailer is already out, we’ll get the genuinely terrifying version that Fox executives banned: they wanted a PG-13 film, and they had to remove any body-horror or bloody sequence from the movie. This new version is for viewers 18 and up and promises that, this time, it will be worth it.

At the very least, this new version will help people catch up on the franchise now that Ryan Coogler has promised to take the reins of a new series with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel of which, for now, only the pilot has been filmed. It’s always a pleasure to see Mulder and Scully again, honestly, even if it’s with what was stolen from us 18 years ago.
