Doom Eternal is one of the best shooters of the last decade, and not for nothing. Its frenetic pace, exceptional gunplay, and exquisite music make it a tough competitor. Unlike the original Doom, its popularity has been sustained exclusively by its virtues. Because if there’s one thing Doom has always stood out for, it’s its adaptability, and the number of mods it has had. Doom eternal will also reflect this soon.
One of the big announcements that QuakeCon 2024 brought us this weekend is that the PC version of Doom Eternal now has official mod support. After installing the beta patch 6.66 Rev 3, all players will be able to download and play mods through the PC Mod Preview feature, which is easily navigable through Steam. However, it is only available on the Valve platform. However, the company has confirmed that it will soon be available on the Microsoft Store as well.
If you want to try this new functionality, you will first have to activate it. To do so, go to your Steam library, then go to Doom Eternal and right-click and go to Properties. There you will have to go to Betas and select pc-mod-preview from the dropdown menu. Accept to save the selection, wait for the update to download, and you’ll be ready. And you have nothing to worry about—even though it’s the beta version, it’s a safe update that won’t pose any danger to your game or your computer.
This is great news because one thing that has kept Doom as one of the great franchises for 30 years has been its mods. The ability to modify and shape it has kept its audience interested. This has allowed its evolution and also maintained interest in creating other games in the franchise, like this Doom Eternal. We hope it has the same lifespan as the original Doom.
Meanwhile, id Software continues to work on the next installment of the franchise, named Doom: The Dark Ages. Set between the events of the first Doom and Doom Eternal, it will take us to a more mythological vision of the Doom universe. With a planned release for 2025, it will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.
