After leaving Xbox, Double Fine is prioritizing smaller experimental projects

Double Fine Productions says Brütal Legend 2 isn’t in development right now. In his latest comments, Tim Schafer pretty much puts to rest the idea that Double Fine is gearing up for a surprise sequel reveal. He’d already said back in August 2025 that the studio was working on multiple new projects, and that none of them were sequels.
What has changed is Double Fine’s situation. After the studio split off from Xbox Game Studios in July 2026, it got control of its future back and recovered the IP and publishing rights to its full catalog, including Brütal Legend and Psychonauts 2. Schafer has also said he’s still interested in doing some kind of follow-up, but he sounds pulled in two directions: making the more straightforward action-adventure game a lot of fans want, or leaning harder into the original game’s more divisive real-time strategy side.
So if you assumed independence would lead straight to a sequel, that’s clearly not where things stand. Double Fine has also restructured and cut 23 jobs, and right now the studio seems more focused on smaller experiments like Amnesia Fortnight. On August 31, 2026, a Kickstarter will let people back a prototype that could turn into a smaller full game. In the meantime, you can still buy Double Fine’s older games, and doing that directly supports the newly independent studio.
