In a surprising news, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the latest installment of the acclaimed Bioware series, will join the list of free games on PlayStation Plus in March, just four months after its release. This RPG, which follows the story of a team of seven companions on a mission to defeat ancient gods in the world of Thedas, will be available alongside Sonic Colors: Ultimate and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection starting March 4.
The rebirth of Dragon Age… Or so Bioware intends
Despite receiving praise for its combat and visual design, The Veilguard has not met the sales targets that Electronic Arts expected. Andrew Wilson, the company’s CEO, mentioned that the game lacked the shared world features that have popularized other titles, such as Destiny, which limited its audience. This comment highlights a growing need in the video game market for interconnected experiences, something that The Veilguard did not offer.
The development of the game was marked by significant changes, as Bioware had to pivot from a live service approach to a more traditional design. Despite the difficulties, the company managed to retain unique elements of combat and design that have been acclaimed by critics. The combat mechanics are described as strategic and entertaining, which has led many to consider The Veilguard a satisfying conclusion to the Dragon Age series.
The inclusion of the game in the PlayStation Plus service can be seen as a strategy to increase its player base after a disappointing debut in a competitive launch environment. While some may interpret it as a sign of failure, the opportunity to try one of Bioware’s recent creations may attract new fans and rekindle interest in this chapter of the saga.
